Colombia

1984 & 2016

In January 1984, Todd and several friends from the northeastern US went on a mountaineering expedition to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the tallest coastal mountain range in the world. They completed a number of first ascents, including a hard new mixed route on the South Face of Pico La Riena (Swain & Welch), a solo first ascent of the NE Ridge of Pico Ojeda (Swain) and two new routes on the north slope of the range (Thackray & Welch). The approach was made via San Sebastian and the exit via the Rio Donachui.

In December 2016, Todd & Donette rock climbed at Suesca (approximately one hour north of Bogota) and Mesa Los Santos (about one hour south of Bucaramanga), repeating many classic climbs as well as establishing four new routes. They also visited Bogota, Salento and Cartagena.
