West Africa
Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire – November/December 2024
Donette and Todd spent the later part of November and first part of December, 2024 in west Africa. They flew to Accra, Ghana and rented a car. From Accra they went about five hours north to Asubone on Lake Volta to attend the West African Climbing Festival. They provided a slideshow, taught two anchor building classes and did one new route while at the festival.
The couple then climbed at Mount Krobo, doing two new routes plus some established climbs. After that, they visited the World Heritage Site slave castles near Cape Coast. This visit tied in with the Atlantic Slave Trade interpretive work Todd had done with the National Park Service in 2016-17 in Charleston, SC and the US Virgin Islands.
It was then to Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire. The pair gave a slideshow to local climbers and went to the World Heritage Site of Grand Bassam. A case of tourista curtailed plans to climb in Cote D’Ivoire and led to a slightly hastened trip home.
