Argentina and Antarctic Peninsula – February/March 2026

Todd and Donette spent six weeks in Argentina, the Drake Passage and visiting islands along the Antarctic Peninsula. Heading to and from Tierra del Fuego, they spent a total of five days in Buenos Aires seeing sites such as the fabulous Recoleta Cemetery and a tango show at Cafe Tortoni.

They flew south to Ushuaia, where they spent several days exploring Tierra del Fuego before boarding their sailboat to head further south.

Years earlier, they chartered a 78-foot French sailboat with a crew of three (French captain, Rapa Nui first mate and Argentine cook). Joining Donette and Todd on the expedition were two friends – one from New Hampshire and the other from San Francisco.

Once weather allowed, the group sailed across the Drake Passage to Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands. The group eventually did the first ascent of Edinburgh Hill, a large basalt formation on Livingston Island. This ascent was five years in the making.

The group visited Livingston, Halfmoon, Deception, Trinity and Hoseason Islands. They saw orcas, penguins, seals, whales, and other critters as well as stunning landscapes.

A very memorable crossing north eventually got the group back to Ushuaia on the Beagle Channel.
